TAKEICHIRO HIRAI, the Japanese pupil of Pau Casals, gives a concert in tribute to the Maestro On Saturday, 13th June, at 10.00 p.m., a concert in tribute to Pau Casals will be held with Takeichiro Hira at the cello and Motoki Hirai at the piano. They will interpret pieces by Bach, Schumann, Granados, Casals and Davidov.

Takeichiro Hirai met Pau Casals in Puerto Rico in 1957 and had the opportunity to study under him for five years. Casals became his protector and had a great influence on his career from both the musical and the human standpoints. In 1961 Hirai made his debut in Tokyo under the direction of Pau Casals, with the concertos of Dvorak, Schumann, Lalo and Boccherini. Over the course of his musical career, he has played with the most highly acknowledged orchestras in such important auditoriums as the Musikverein (Vienna), the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Wigmore Hall (London), the Salle Gaveau (Paris) and Carnegie Hall (New York).

Likewise, he was awarded the First Prize of the Japan Music Competition in 1954 and the Extraordinary Prize of the 1st Concurs International de Violoncel Pau Casals of Paris in 1957. Hirai has also been an active composer of symphonic works, chamber music, choral music and lieder. Until 2003 he was the director of the Composers and Authors Association of Japan. At present he is making a concert tour of Europe with his son the pianist Motoki Hirai.

Diverse original documents on the relation between Casals and Hirai, preserved at the Archive of the Pau Casals Foundation, will be displayed in the hall of the Auditorium.
